18 latest hospital, health system executive moves

The following hospital and health system executive moves were reported by Becker's Hospital Review in the last week. They are listed below, beginning with the most recent.

1. Barton Health in South Lake Tahoe, Calif., selected its CMO, Clint Purvance, MD, as the health system's new president and CEO.

2. Nashville, Tenn.-based Saint Thomas Health, a five-hospital system that is part of St. Louis-based Ascension Health, announced two leadership promotions. Don King, who previously served as COO for Saint Thomas Midtown and Saint Thomas West hospitals, both in Nashville, will now become president and CEO of the two hospitals. Bernie Sherry, who took over the role of president and CEO of Saint Thomas Midtown and Saint Thomas West hospitals in 2013, will now become COO of Saint Thomas Health.

3. Two health system veterans will take the helms of several Bon Secours Richmond (Va.) Health System hospitals, effective Oct. 1. Mark M. Gordon, CEO of St. Francis Medical Center in Midlothian, Va., was named CEO of three Bon Secours hospitals: Memorial Regional Medical Center in Mechanicsville, Va., Richmond (Va.) Community Hospital and Rappahannock General Hospital in Kilmarnock, Va. Francine Barr, vice president and COO of St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond, has been promoted to CEO of St. Mary's Hospital.

4. Michael Reney, senior vice president and CFO at Boston-based Brigham and Women's Hospital, is leaving his position to become CFO of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, also in Boston.

5. Pikeville (Ky.) Medical Center named Aaron Crum, MD, CMO.

6. Kevin E. Smith will serve as COO of High Point (N.C.) Regional Health, part of Chapel Hill-based UNC Health Care.

7. John L. Brooks III stepped down as president, CEO and member of the board of trustees at Boston-based Joslin Diabetes Center, the Harvard-affiliated diabetes research and treatment clinic. Eliot M. Lurier, CFO and treasurer, will serve as interim CEO.

8. Stone County Hospital in Wiggins, Miss., named Joan Strayham, MSN, CEO.

9. Randy Sauls, CEO of Valdosta-based South Georgia Medical Center, resigned from his post. SGMC CFO Raymond Snead Jr., DSc, will serve as interim CEO. 

10. Terry Carroll stepped down from his position as chief innovation officer at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

11. Matthew Bailey was named COO of IU Health Bloomington (Ind.), effective Oct. 5.

12. Scott Barber was hired as CEO of Houston County Community Hospital in Erin, Tenn. Ken Tillman was hired as CFO.

13. Brentwood, Tenn.-based LifePoint Health named James "Jamie" Carter COO of the company's Eastern Group of facilities, effective Sept. 28.

14. Burlington, Mass.-based Lahey Hospital & Medical Center named Linda Moulton CEO of its executive and international health programs.

15. Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems named Thomas D. Miller CEO of its planned spin-off company called Quorum Health Corp. Michael J. Culotta will serve as CFO of Quorum Health Corp.

16. Franklin, Tenn.-based Capella Healthcare named Gary Willis executive vice president and CFO.

17. David L. Bernd, CEO of Norfolk, Va.-based Sentara Healthcare, will retire March 3, 2016, bringing to a close to a 43-year career with 21 years at the helm. Upon Mr. Bernd's retirement, Howard P. Kern, the current president and COO of Sentara, will take over as CEO.

18. Gino Patrizio, COO of Marysville, Calif.-based Rideout Health, will be promoted to CEO this fall.
