Dr. Richard Afable: A Physician Leader for Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian

Richard Afable, MD, MPH, is president and CEO of Covenant Health Network. He previously served as president and CEO of Newport Beach, Calif.-based Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, a non-profit system with hospitals in Newport Beach and Irvine, Calif., a position he took on in 2005.



Dr. Afable is board certified in internal medicine and received his medical degree from Loyola Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago. After earning his degree, he ran a private practice for 10 years. He then taught medicine at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C., before transitioning into management.

In 2012, he made Becker's Hospital Review's list of 300 Hospital and Health System Leaders to Know. He is also on Becker's Hospital Review's 2012 list of 100 Leaders of Great Hospitals and the 2012 list of 100 Physician Leaders of Hospitals and Health Systems.

As president and CEO of Hoag, Dr. Afable is responsible for all aspects of hospital operations and quality of care. He directs a 23-member executive leadership team. Under his leadership, Hoag reported $1.5 billion in assets and $800 million in net patient revenue for 2012.
