Top 5 wearable, mHealth purchases consumers plan to make in the next year

The Consumer Technology Associations U.S. Consumer Electronics Sales and Forecasts projects health and fitness device sales reaching $1.8 billion in total revenue by the end of 2015. This represents an 18 percent growth year-over-year, and is expected to jump another 10 percent by the end of 2016. But how exactly are consumers spending money on such devices?

Respondents to a survey of adult Americans purchasing mHealth and fitness devices online said that their primary decision driver was a suggestion from friends or family followed by online suggestions and suggestions from a medical professional.

Here are the top five purchase categories for consumers buying health-related devices in the next 12 months, according to the Consumer Technology Association.

1. Smart watches — 35 percent
2. Fitness apps — 30 percent
3. Wearable fitness devices — 27 percent
4. Smart apparel — 27 percent
5. Sleep trackers — 23 percent
