Tablet computers like iPads may improve physician workflow, according to a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
Researchers gave iPads to 115 University of Chicago internal medicine resident physicians. The were instructed to continue normal tasks they may have previously performed on a computer such as accessing electronic patient records, the hospital's paging system to order tests and medical publications for reference information.
Results from the study include:
• Four months after receiving the iPads, 90 percent of the physicians reported they were still using the tablets for work. Most reported using the iPad every day.
• More than three quarters of the physicians reported the iPads had helped them save about an hour a day.
• Sixty-eight percent of the physicians reported delays in patient care were prevented because of the tablet.
