Rush University Medical Center launches electronic consultations for primary care patients

Chicago-based Rush University Medical Center is offering an online medical evaluation service to its primary care patients. The service allows patients to take advantage of electronic consultations with physicians to determine diagnosis and treatment.

The web-based application, called Rush SmartExam, will be available to adults who have an established primary care physician at Rush and have visited them within the last year. The application requires the patient to answer a questionnaire regarding their symptoms, which is then delivered to participating Rush providers. The physician also receives a computer-generated diagnosis. The physician decides on the treatment plan, which is then sent electronically to the patient.

The service can be used to treat a number of minor conditions, such as acne, bladder infections as well as the flu.

"Patients will be able to get a medical evaluation electronically from the comfort of their home for non-urgent conditions commonly treated by a primary care physician," said Anthony Perry, MD, CMO of Rush University Medical Group and a participating provider. "People have busy lives and we want to create convenient and high-quality options that work."
