There were 57 total data breaches in the month of November, up 60 percent from the number of breaches in October, according to the Protenus Breach Barometer.
Here are five takeaways from the report.
1. In November, there were 458,639 records compromised in the 57 total breaches. There were 776,533 records compromised in a total of 35 total breaches in October.
2. Approximately 54.4 percent of the November breaches — 31 incidents — were due to organization insiders or employees. Another 17.5 percent of the breaches were due to loss or theft, 15.8 percent were due to hacking and 12.3 percent were from unknown causes.
3. Forty of the November breaches — 70.1 percent of reported entities — involved healthcare providers. Eleven of the incidents involved health plans and three involved businesses. One involved a financial services firm, one involved an anti-doping agency and one involved another type of business.
4. It took the average entity 135 days from the time the breach occurred to report it to HHS. Approximately 65 percent of reporting entities took longer than HHS' set 60-day window to report a breach.
5. The 57 data breaches in November took place in 24 states. California and Delaware each experienced nine breaches. However, the numbers in these states are high because they're analyzed based on the vendor's location rather than the client's.
