MMIC, a medical liability insurance provider based in Minneapolis, is leveraging data analytics through its Surgical Claims Deep Dive project, according to a MDNEWS report.
Three years ago, MMIC partnered with CRICO Strategies, Risk Management Foundation of the Harvard Medical Institutions in Boston. Through this partnership, MMIC is able to analyze its own malpractice claims data in conjunction with CRICO's 30-plus years of claims data, according to the report.
MMIC and CRICO examined data from 1,843 malpractice cases from 10 states between 2010 and 2013. "Improper performance of surgery" and "improper management of the surgical patient" accounted for 84 percent of all surgical liability claims, according to the report.
MMIC hopes to use the insights gained from the project to create resources and provide education on key patient safety issues.
