Cerner dominates the EMR market, although smaller vendors are also making their mark, according to a Kalorama Information report.
The report, titled EMR Market 2017: Electronic Medical Records in an Era of Disruption, calculated market share based on hardware, software and services revenue related to EMRs in 2016, including services like consulting and training.
By contrast, KLAS' U.S. Hospital EMR Market Share 2017 report — which focused on purchasing decisions made at small, acute-care hospitals with fewer than 200 beds in 2016 — found Epic led the market, followed by Cerner and Meditech.
Here are the top four EMR vendors, according to the Kalorama Information report.
1. Cerner
2. McKesson
3. Epic
4. Allscripts
Athenahealth, eClinicalWorks, GE Healthcare, Meditech and at least 600 other vendors comprise the remainder of the market, according to the report.
"A few companies have more than half the market, but it's still true to say no company, not even the largest healthcare IT firms, have even a fifth of this market," said Bruce Carlson, publisher of Kalorama Information.
