Illinois to streamline state medical credentialing with blockchain

The Illinois Blockchain Initiative, a consortium of Illinois state and county agencies, partnered with the blockchain startup Hashed Health Aug. 9 on a pilot program targeted toward medical credentialing.

The partnership will initially use a blockchain-based registry to share medical credentialing data among credentialing bodies, in part to automate workflow for multistate and interstate licensure. The goal of the collaboration is to improve the efficiency and accuracy of the medical credentialing process.

"We are excited to explore how distributed ledger technology can improve current bottlenecks in the medical licensing process and hope to share our learnings with other state boards and entities interested in collaborating on this project going forward," said Jennifer O'Rourke, blockchain business liaison for the Illinois Blockchain Initiative.
