HHS releases guidance on global ransomware attack

HHS issued an update to its ransomware guidance June 28 following reports about a worldwide ransomware attack — reportedly called "Petya" — that infected computer systems in more than 60 countries June 27.

The update, which targets healthcare organizations, comprises steps one should take after falling victim to a ransomware attack and preventative measures to mitigate a ransomware threat. The update also emphasized the use of a "vaccine" that reportedly helps protect against infection.

HHS also stressed how infected third-party organizations may impact services at hospitals and health systems.

"[The] compromise of a Danish shipping company has temporarily limited or stopped container shipping into and out of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey as well as the Port of Los Angeles which could disrupt supply chains for many sectors, including the [healthcare and public health] sector," the guidance reads.
