The healthcare industry exposed the most records of any industry in 2016, according to the Identity Theft Resource Center's end-of-year data breach report.
Here are the results for five industries, ranked by prevalence of breaches in 2016.
- Business: 45.3 percent of breaches, 15.5 percent of exposed records
- Healthcare/medical: 34.5 percent of breaches, 43.6 percent of exposed records
- Education: 9 percent of breaches, 2.9 percent of exposed records
- Government/military: 6.6 percent of breaches, 37.9 percent of exposed records
- Banking/credit/financial: 4.8 percent of breaches, 0.2 percent of exposed records
