GE, Massachusetts General sponsor hackathon to address Boston's opioid epidemic

GE Foundation, the philanthropic arm of GE, and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston will host a hackathon in September to develop and design solutions to the region's opioid substance abuse problem, reports Boston Business Journal.

During the hackathon, 250 participants from around the country will join together to devise solutions, software-based or otherwise, that can help address the epidemic. The hackathon will run Sept. 9-11.

GE Foundation has committed $50 million in contributions to the Boston community as part of its decision to relocate to the city earlier this year. About $15 million will go to public health efforts, which includes funding for the hackathon.

GE officially relocated its headquarters to Boston Monday.
