Apple hires Carnegie Mellon professor to improve its AI

Apple pegged Russ Salakhutdinov, PhD, as director of artificial intelligence research, Engadget reports.

Dr. Salakhutdinov is an associate professor in the machine learning department at Pittsburgh-based Carnegie Mellon University. He will keep his position at Carnegie Mellon.

"Excited about joining Apple as a director of AI research in addition to my work at CMU," Dr. Salakhutdinov tweeted yesterday.

Though Engadget did not reveal what Dr. Salakhutdinov's main projects will be, his work may focus on improving Siri's functionality.
