Apple appoints first COO since Tim Cook's rise to CEO

Apple has named Jeff Williams COO, the first person to fill the role since former COO Tim Cook left the position to become CEO in 2011.

Mr. Williams joined Apple in 1998 as head of worldwide procurement and became vice president of operations in 2004. In 2010, Mr. Williams assumed oversight of Apple's supply chain, service and support, and social responsibility initiatives.

Mr. Williams was instrumental in launching the Apple Watch, which the Wall Street Journal notes is an important milestone, as it was the company's first hardware product launch since the iPad in 2010 and "served as a test for whether Apple can still churn out the type of game-changing products that were a hallmark of the Jobs era."

Apple made three additional leadership announcements: Johnny Srouji, vice president of hardware technologies, was appointed senior vice president of hardware technologies. Phil Schiller, senior vice president of worldwide marketing, will also oversee leadership of the App Store across all Apple platforms. Tor Myhren was named vice president of marketing communications.
