The American Hospital Association's Health Forum and CHIME have released the results of the 17th annual HealthCare's Most Wired Survey.
The survey, sponsored by VMware, serves as a benchmark for IT use and adoption in healthcare nationwide. This year's survey gathered responses from more than 740 respondents representing more than 2,200 hospitals.
Here are seven characteristics of the hospitals deemed "Most Wired."
1. Ninety-six percent of hospitals named to the Most Wired list use intrusion detection systems, compared to 85 percent of all respondents.
2. Nearly eight out of 10 Most Wired hospitals conduct incident response exercises annually, while just four out of 10 of all hospitals do.
3. The boards of 83 percent of the Most Wired hospitals include cybersecurity risk when looking at risk management and reduction.
4. While physicians at 63 percent of all hospitals can view and exchange other facilities' results in a patient portal, physicians can do so at 84 percent of Most Wired hospitals.
5. More than three-quarters of Most Wired hospitals use portals and EHRs to exchange results with other EHRs and health information exchanges. Just 56 percent of all hospitals do the same.
6. Approximately eight in 10 Most Wired hospitals communicate with patients through email, while approximately six in 10 of all hospitals do so.
7. Almost nine in 10 Most Wired hospitals offer patient portal access through a mobile app, and 60 percent offer patient-specific education in multiple languages.
The survey was conducted between Jan. 15 and March 15, 2015.
