As the industry strives to improve patient care by moving away from paper records to electronic medical records, some hospitals have made bigger strides to enhancing the digital exchange of information than others. To recognize these hospitals, U.S. News & World Report has published its 2015-16 list of the Most Connected Hospitals.
The list — which was published this year for the first time since 2012 — includes 159 hospitals in 37 states. To select hospitals, U.S. News looked at many variables, including clinical connectedness, patient safety and patient engagement.
"Despite spending billions on digitizing clinical data, our health systems have yet to realize the full promise of electronic medical records. The hospitals on this list have taken important strides toward healthcare's digital future," said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis at U.S. News. "These hospitals have made significant advancements in clinical connectedness, patient engagement and patient safety."
The states with the most facilities on the 2015-16 Most Connected Hospitals list are:
1. Ohio — 23 hospitals
2. Wisconsin — 16
3. Pennsylvania — 12
4. Michigan — 11
5. California and Texas (tie) — 10
