10 Recent Healthcare Data Breaches

Here are 10 data breaches that occurred within the past month, starting with the most recent.

1. On March 17, HealthSource of Ohio in Milford announced the personal, health and financial information of 8,800 patients was compromised when the health system put the patients' information into a Web-based software program that was not password-protected.

2. Glenwood, Colo.-based Valley View Hospital announced March 14 that it had suffered a data breach when hackers introduced a virus into the hospital's computer system that took screenshots of 5,400 patients' personal records.

3. On March 13, Detroit Medical Center Harper University Hospital notified 1,087 patients that documents with their personal health information were found with a hospital employee during an identity theft investigation.

4. On March 12, UCSF notified 9,986 of its patients their information was contained in computers that were stolen from the UCSF Family Medicine Center.

5. Irvine, Calif.-based St. Joseph Health announced March 12 it had mistakenly released the protected health information of 11,800 home health patients to an investment firm working on a business proposal for the health system.

6. High Point, N.C.-based Cornerstone Health Care announced on March 11 that it had alerted more than 500 patients after a laptop containing patients' personal information was stolen from Cornerstone Neurology, one of its practice locations.

7. On March 10, Atlanta-based Emory Healthcare announced an employee laptop containing the personal information of 826 patients had been stolen from a vehicle at one of its clinics.

8. On March 6, Los Angeles County medical facilities announced as many as 168,500 patients' personal data was contained on computer equipment that was stolen from a Los Angeles County contractor's office.

9. Pittsburg-based UPMC announced March 6 that a data breach had compromised the personal information of 322 UPMC employees.

10. On March 4, Charleston, S.C.-based Roper Hospital announced erroneous faxes containing patient's protected health information had been sent to a man in Portland, Ore.
