UPMC operating income falls 68% last quarter: 5 key points

For the three-month period that ended March 31, Pittsburgh-based UPMC reported its operating revenue increased while its operating income fell 68.5 percent.

Here are five things to know about the system's financials for last quarter.

1. UPMC reported its operating revenue increased to nearly $3 billion in the three-month period that ended March 31, up 5.6 percent from the same period of last year.

2. The system's net patient service revenue experienced little change last quarter, falling less than 1 percent.

3. UPMC reported its revenue attributable to insurance enrollment increased to nearly $1.4 billion last quarter, up 16 percent from a year ago.

4. The system's expenses increased to $2.9 billion in the three-month period that ended March 31, compared to $2.8 billion in the same period of last year.

5. UPMC reported its operating income fell to $20.2 million last quarter, down from $64 million a year ago.
