King of Prussia, Pa.-based Universal Health Services reported net income of $206.1 million in the first quarter of this year, up about 8 percent from $190.8 million in the same period of 2016.
Here are five things to know about UHS' most recent financial results.
1. The for-profit hospital operator said revenues increased 6.7 percent year over year to $2.6 billion in the first quarter of 2017.
2. The financial boost was attributable, in part, to an increase in patient volume. UHS said admissions at its acute care facilities, when adjusted for outpatient activity, were up 5.1 percent in the first quarter of 2017, as compared to the same period of 2016.
3. Admissions at UHS' behavioral health facilities were up 2.4 percent year over year in the first quarter of this year.
4. UHS' acute care facilities provided $416 million in charity care and uninsured discounts in the first quarter of 2017, up from the $345 million provided in the same period of the year prior.
5. After factoring in higher expenses, UHS' operating income decreased from $356.3 million in the first quarter of 2016 to $353.9 million in the first quarter of this year.
