Should we develop a chief nursing finance officer?

In a recent blog post, Danielle Miller, PHD(c), MSN, RNC-OB, Chief Nursing Officer, Clinical Applications at Infor asks if we should develop a chief nursing finance officer.

Nurses account for the largest percentage of workers in a hospital, according to the post. Now that hospital reimbursement is linked to improving patient outcomes and the patient experience, it makes total sense that nurses have a direct impact on revenue, patient satisfaction and outcomes.

Hospitals across the country face the same financial challenges, but they also have enormous amounts of data that can be used to measure multiple things such as efficiency and patient outcomes. This data may help us better understand and interpret the value and cost of care, including how nurses are used and assigned through electronic software programs for nurse scheduling and staffing patterns.

So, what if you had the data to link your patients' experiences with their nursing care? Clinical as well as financial implications are twofold: better patient outcomes as well as increased reimbursement available to hospital organizations. This is directly related to the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey—whose scores are used, in large part, as a basis for a hospital's reimbursement.
