San Diego-based Scripps Health reported an operating margin of 5.2 percent for the third quarter of fiscal year 2015, down from an operating margin of 5.3 percent in the same period a year ago.
Here are six things to know about the system's most-recent financials.
1. Scripps reported operating revenues of $674.6 million for the third quarter of FY 2015, up from operating revenues of $596.7 million in the comparable period of 2014.
2. The system said the boost in revenue was primarily attributable to an increase in net patient service revenue due to higher patient volumes, including higher emergency department visits and outpatient cases.
3. The system also reported an additional $25.1 million in revenue from California's provider fee program. However, Scripps also recorded a $22.4 million expense related to the program in the third quarter of FY 2015.
4. The system's operating expenses grew to $641.3 million in the third quarter of FY 2015, up from operating expenses of $566.1 million in the same period of last year.
5. The system reported operating income of $35 million in the third quarter of this year, up from operating income of $31.3 million in the comparable period of 2014.
6. The system ended the third quarter of this year with a net surplus of $51.1 million, down from a net surplus of $78.8 million in the same period of last year.
