The city of San Francisco is calling for its Roman Catholic Archdiocese to pay nearly $3 million for violating a local law requiring businesses to provide insurance or pay into a health savings plan for employees who work a minimum of eight hours per week, according to a report from the San Francisco Chronicle.
The city alleges the archdiocese violated the Health Care Security Ordinance by failing to pay for health coverage for 1,083 employees between October 2009 and June 2016, according to the report. The archdiocese denied the findings and said many of its employees do not work in the city, so they are not covered by the law, according to the report.
The city is also seeking $113,000 in penalties. The archdiocese can pay the fines or appeal the finding to the city controller, according to the report.
