Practice Greenhealth: Hospitals saved $76M through environmental improvements

Healthcare industry leaders are successfully reducing their organizations' environmental footprint, achieving financial savings and changing the culture of their organizations, according to the recently released Practice Greenhealth 2015 Environmental Excellence Awards Sustainability Benchmark Report.

The report summarizes the sustainability achievements of 220 hospitals that are setting the standard for healthcare environmental stewardship and is based on the data covering performance in 2014.

According to the report, the 220 hospitals studied diverted more than 92,000 tons of waste from landfills through recycling, saving nearly $4 million, among other achievements.

Jeffrey Brown, executive director of Practice Greenhealth, argues the Sustainability Benchmark Report demonstrates what is possible in healthcare sustainability.

"By showing what these 220 hospitals have accomplished, the report provides an excellent indication of the environmental and financial benefits that can be realized across the full sector of over 5,500 hospitals across the country," said Mr. Brown.
