UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, Calif., failed to comply with Medicare billing requirements for 101 of 231 inpatient and outpatient claims reviewed by HHS' Office of Inspector General during the audit period of Jan. 1, 2011, through Sept. 30, 2013, according to a recent OIG audit report.
The 101 claims that did not comply with Medicare billing requirements resulted in the hospital receiving $2.4 million in overpayments, according to the OIG.
Based on its findings, the OIG recommended the hospital refund the Medicare contractor $2.4 million, consisting of nearly $1.9 million in overpayments for incorrectly billed inpatient claims and $545,802 in overpayments for incorrectly billed outpatient claims. The OIG also recommended the hospital strengthen its controls to ensure full compliance with Medicare requirements.
UC Davis Medical Center concurred with the OIG's recommendations.
