Evanston, Ill.-based NorthShore University HealthSystem reported a net surplus of $38.2 million for the three-month period that ended June 30, down from a net surplus of $71.7 million for the same period a year ago, according to the system's recently released unaudited financial statement.
The system's revenue increased in the second quarter of this year, growing to $492.6 million, up from $484.4 million for the same period of 2014. After accounting for expenses, the system ended the second quarter with operating income of $37.2 million, up from $34.6 million in the same period of last year.
However, the system took a hit on its investments in the second quarter of FY 2015, which caused the significant decrease in the system's net surplus.
When looking at the nine-month period that ended June 30, NorthShore posted operating income of $111.2 million, up from $96.5 million for the same period of last year. The system reported net income of $132.2 million for the nine-month period that ended June 30, down from $177.2 million for the comparable period of 2014.
