Medical billing and coding job growth expected to climb by 15%

It is (still) a good time to be in the revenue cycle industry.

The job market for medical records and health information technicians, which includes medical billers and coders, is expected to grow by 15 percent between 2014 and 2024, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics. While sector job growth in 2013 was considerably higher (21 percent), the field continues to expand faster than the average rate for occupations overall.

Below are three statistics from the bureau's report on medical records and HIM technicians.

1. Median annual pay for HIM and medical record employees in May 2015 was $37,110.

2. HIM technicians and medical billers accounted for about 188,600 jobs in 2014.

3. The field is expected to add an additional 29,000 positions between 2014 and 2024.
