Hawaii governor's proposed budget includes $9.5M for Maui hospitals

Hawaii Gov. David Ige (D) on Monday released his proposed executive two-year, $28.5 billion budget, reports The Maui News.

Here are four things to know.

1. The budget includes $9.5 million to help fund Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente's planned takeover of Wailuku-based Maui Memorial Medical Center, according to the article.

2. Additionally, the report notes, the budget includes money for separation bonuses for employees who will lose their public-sector jobs in the transition.

3. The transition from the quasi-public Hawaii Health System Corp. to Kaiser was initially scheduled for July 1 this year. However, a union court challenge and uncertainty over protecting public worker benefits delayed the change until July 2017, resulting in a financial shortfall for the Maui Region hospitals, which also include Kula (Hawaii) Hospital and Lanai Community Hospital in Lanai City, according to the report.

4. The funds, if approved by state lawmakers, are for fiscal year 2018 and would be a reimbursement to HHSC.
