Florida's new plan for hospital funding: 3 things to know

Florida legislators have agreed on a $2 billion plan to fund hospitals in the state, according to a Miami Herald/Tampa Bay Times Tallahassee Bureau report.

Here are three things to know about Florida's plan.

1. The plan will set aside nearly $400 million in next year's budget for the Low Income Pool to aid the state's safety-net hospitals. The state has received between $1 billion and $2 billion from the federal government annually to support its Low Income Pool. However, federal officials do not intend to fund the Low Income Pool at the same level as it is now. So the $400 million is to help make up for the federal cut.

2. Miami-based Jackson Health, Fort Lauderdale-based Broward Health, Tampa (Fla.) General and St. Petersburg-based All Children's Hospital Johns Hopkins are the largest recipients of the Low Income Pool, according to the report.

3. The new funding model is scheduled to take effect July 1 pending approval by the full Florida Legislature, Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) and the federal government.
