Financial updates from Banner, SSM Health & 3 other systems

The following five health systems recently released their financial statements for 2016.

1. St. Louis-based SSM Health's revenue increased 11.9 percent year over year to $6.1 billion in 2016. The health system ended last year with operating income of $10 million, down 86.6 percent from $229.7 million in 2015. 

2. Inova Health's revenue increased about 9.5 percent year over year to $3.3 billion in 2016. The Falls Church, Va.-based system ended 2016 with operating income of $18 million, down 92 percent from $221.4 million in the year prior.

3. Phoenix-based Banner Health reported revenue of $7.6 billion in 2016, up 9.5 percent from revenue of $7 billion in the year prior. The system ended last year with operating income of $157 million, up 22 percent from $128.4 million in 2015.

4. Pittsburgh-based Highmark Health recorded revenue of $18.2 billion in 2016, up 3 percent from revenue of $17.7 billion in the year prior. Highmark Health ended last year with operating income of $64 million, up from an operating loss of $565 million in 2015.

5. Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Novant Health's revenue increased 5 percent year over year to $4.3 billion in 2016. The system ended last year with operating income of $258.8 million, a slight increase from operating income of $258.4 million in 2015.
