The following 16 health systems recently released their financial statements for the three-month period that ended March 31.
1. Dignity Health operating income gets boost from higher patient volumes
San Francisco-based Dignity Health reported revenue of nearly $3 billion for the three-month period that ended March 31, up from $2.6 billion in the comparable period of 2014. The system, which operates 39 hospitals in Arizona, California and Nevada, reported operating income of $39.9 million for the three-month period compared to a $20 million operating loss for the same period of last year.
2. Scripps sees operating gains in Q2
San Diego-based Scripps Health posted revenue of nearly $649 million for the three months that ended March 31, up from $600.2 million in the same period of last year. The system reported operating income of $36.6 million, up from $31.2 million for the same period a year ago.
3. UnityPoint Health operating income soars 338% in Q1
West Des Moines, Iowa-based UnityPoint Health reported revenue of $936.6 million for the first quarter of fiscal 2015, up 5 percent from the comparable period of last year. The system's operating income jumped 338.5 percent in the three months that ended March 31, to $19.3 million.
4. Cleveland Clinic operating income jumps 45% in Q1
Cleveland Clinic reported revenue of $1.6 billion for the first quarter of fiscal 2015, which ended March 31, up 3.3 percent from the same period of last year. Cleveland Clinic reported operating income of $60.7 million for the first quarter, up 45.1 percent from the same period a year ago.
5. OhioHealth operating margin improves on patient volume growth
OhioHealth, an 11-hospital system based in Columbus, reported revenue of $816.4 million for the period ended March 31, up from $689.6 million for the same period a year ago. The system posted operating income of $57 million, up 48.6 percent from the comparable period of last year.
6. Texas Health Resources' net income soars more than 70% in Q1
Arlington-based Texas Health Resources reported its operating revenue jumped to $978.4 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2015, up nearly 3.9 percent from the same period a year ago. The system reported operating income of $43.9 million, compared to $34.4 million for the same period of the year prior.
7. Ascension revenue increases while profits slump 39%
St. Louis-based Ascension reported revenue of $5.1 billion for the three months ended March 31, up from about $5 billion in the same period of 2014. The system reported operating income of $133.1 million, compared to $138 million for the same period a year ago.
8. Banner Health net income jumps 32% in Q1
Phoenix-based Banner Health reported revenue of nearly $1.6 billion for the three months ended March 31, up from $1.3 billion for the same period of 2014. The system posted operating income of $85.9 million, up from $84.2 million for the comparable period of last year.
9. Kaiser operating income drops 9.6% in Q1
Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente posted operating revenue of $15 billion in the first quarter of fiscal 2015, which ended March 31, compared to $13.9 billion in the same period of last year. The system reported operating income of $741 million, down from $820 million for the comparable period of 2014.
10. Mayo surplus falls to $88M as costs rise
Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic reported revenue of $2.5 billion in the three months ended March 31, up from $2.4 billion in the same period of last year. The system reported operating income of $88 million, down from $155 million for the same period of 2014.
11. UPMC operating income falls 68% last quarter
Pittsburgh-based UPMC reported operating revenue of nearly $3 billion for the three months ended March 31, up 5.6 percent from the same period of last year. The system reported operating income of $20.2 million, down from $64 million for the same period a year ago.
12. Community Health Systems continues to benefit from HMA acquisition, posts Q1 profit
Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems reported a profit of $79 million on $4.9 billion in revenue for the first quarter of fiscal 2015, up from a $112 million net loss on $4.2 billion in revenue for the same period of fiscal 2014.
13. Tenet swings to profit; Conifer revenues up
Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare posted a profit of $47 million on $4.4 billion in revenue for the first quarter of fiscal 2015, compared with a $32 million loss on $3.9 billion in revenue for the same period of the year prior.
14. UHS net income jumps 26.2% in Q1
King of Prussia, Pa.-based Universal Health Services reported a profit of $174.3 million on $2.2 billion in revenue for the first quarter of fiscal 2015, up from a profit of $138.1 million on $1.9 billion in revenue for the comparable period of fiscal 2014.
15. LifePoint profit increases on higher admissions
Brentwood, Tenn.-based LifePoint Hospitals posted a profit of $38.9 million on $1.3 billion in revenue for the first quarter of fiscal 2015, compared to a profit of $37.1 million on $1 billion in revenue for the same period of the previous year.
16. HCA profit jumps 70% in Q1
Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Holdings posted a profit of $591 million on $9.7 billion in revenue for the first quarter of fiscal 2015, up from a profit of $347 million on $8.8 billion in revenue for the comparable period of fiscal 2014.
