CMS: Hospitals charging Medicare the most, least for common procedures under IPPS

CMS released data on Inpatient Prospective Payment System provider charges for all diagnosis-related groups Aug. 30.

Here are the hospitals with the highest and lowest charges for three of the most common diagnoses at discharge billed to Medicare in 2015.

Hospitals with the highest average charge per diagnosis.

Major joint replacement
1. Memorial Hospital of Salem (N.J.) County:  $235,132
2. Regional Medical Center of San Jose (Calif.):  $223,698
3. Woodland Heights Medical Center (Lufkin, Texas): $213,480

Sepsis
1. CarePoint Health-Hoboken (N.J.) University Medical Center: $244,583
2. Monterey Park (Calif.) Hospital: $237,857
3. NorthBay Medal Center (Fairfield, Ca.): $233,133

Esophagitis, stomach flu and miscellaneous digestive disorders
1. CarePoint Health-Christ Hospital (Jersey City, N.J.): $112,949
2. CarePoint Health-Hoboken University Medical Center: $110,440
3. CarePoint Health-Bayonne (N.J.) Medical Center: $109,076

Hospitals with the lowest average charge per diagnosis.

Major joint replacement
1. Chickasaw Nation Medical Center (Ada, Okla.): $7,492
2. University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center (Towson): $16,687
3. Saint Agnes Hospital (Baltimore): $17,423

Sepsis
1. Purcell (Okla.) Municipal Hospital: $7,283
2. Chambers Memorial Hospital (Danville, Ark.): $7,687
3. Lake Martin Community Hospital (Dadeville, Ala.): $7,947

1. Beacham Memorial Hospital (Magnolia, Miss.): $4,192
2. Yalobusha General Hospital (Water Valley, Miss.): $4,203
