Omaha, Neb.-based CHI Health closed CHI Health Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha Friday morning.
Creighton University Medical Center closed at 7:00 a.m. Friday. At the same time, CHI Health opened a new 20-bed emergency department less than a mile away at Creighton University Medical Center University Campus.
The shuttered hospital's Level I trauma center moved about six miles to CHI Health Creighton University Medical Center Bergan Mercy in Omaha. CUMC Bergan Mercy is also now the teaching facility for Creighton University's medical school.
"We are making bold moves for our patients, our employees and our communities — building a model and relationships that can withstand the pressure of a changing world and limited budgets," CHI Health CEO Cliff Robertson, MD, said in a statement to Becker's. "By moving our academic medical center and investing in the two locations we are changing how doctors and providers are trained and how they care for patients while making care more convenient, collaborative and affordable."
CHI Health told Becker's it cost $175 million to construct the new ED and expand CUMC Bergan Mercy.
