Westminster, Md.-based Carroll Hospital is one step closer to establishing a Neonatal Family Centered Couplet Care program following a $2 million donation to the organization's foundation.
Here are five things to know.
1. The donation, from Greg and Roberta Kahlert of the Kahlert Foundation, will help with implementation of a care program developed at Karolinska University Hospital in Sweden.
2. Under the Swedish-inspired care model dubbed Couplet Care, mothers with infants in need of specialized care will be able to remain with the baby "in a comfortable, monitored room until the baby is discharged from the hospital," according to a news release.
3. According to the release, the rooms feature a bed and family lounge area "where parents and their child can stay together while both mom and baby are cared for by a specially trained medical team."
4. "The Couplet Care concept helps to reduce the length of stay for the baby, encourages bonding and helps parents feel more comfortable in taking care of the baby when they go home," Linda Grogan, the hospital's executive director of women's, children's and surgical services, said in the release.
5. As part of the program's implementation, Carroll Hospital plans to expand The Family Birthplace. The $13.5 million expansion is slated for completion in August 2019, the release states.
