$2.5M awarded to U of L to improve rural Kentucky health

The University of Louisville (Ky.) Thursday received a $2.55 million grant from HHS to improve healthcare for seniors and underserved residents of rural Kentucky, according to the Courier-Journal.

Officials plan to launch the Kentucky Rural & Underserved Geriatric Interprofessional Program, which would focus efforts on clinics and family health centers in Bullitt, Barren, Hart, Henry, Shelby and Metcalfe counties, according to the report.

The funds will go toward establishing an inter-professional education center for geriatric education, toward improving geriatric primary care in rural areas and toward offering family resources for Alzheimer's and dementia patients, according to the report.

The following organizations are partnering with U of L on the effort: Glasgow (Ky.) Family Medicine Clinic, Shelby Family Medicine and Mercy Medical in Shelbyville, Ky., Kentucky River Medical Partners in Jackson, Ky., and U of L Geriatrics Home Care Practice in Bullitt County, Ky., according to the report.
