A breakdown of air conditioning equipment in three patient care units broke down at the Department of Veteran's Affairs Pittsburgh Healthcare System on Friday, resulting in the transfer of 40 patients to other beds in the hospital, according to the Trib Live.
Two of the patients were transferred to other hospitals.
The transfers, which took 16 hours, were completed Saturday morning, Kathleen Pomorski, spokeswoman for the VA Pittsburgh Health System, told the Trib Live.
"We have taken steps to ensure every patient is informed, comfortable and receiving the appropriate level of care," Ms. Pomorski said in an email, according to the report.
The mechanical breakdown forced the hospital to also divert most medical admissions, including surgeries, to other hospitals and VA medical facilities. The VA Pittsburgh Health System's emergency department remained open throughout the situation, according to the report.
Ms. Pomorski said repairs on the system began after the hospital received a part from Milwaukee, and they were expected to be completed Sunday. Patients would then be evaluated and returned to the hospital depending on their medical conditions, according to the report.
