Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic Health System is planning a $65 million hospital surgical suite expansion at its Mankato, Minn. location.
Here are five things to know about the proposed expansion.
1. The expansion is part of a plan to transition the Mankato facility into a major Mayo Clinic regional medical center. The project aims to fully integrate the Mankato campus with the Mayo Clinic practice in Rochester.
2. The expansion will take place on the Mankato hospital's second floor. Once completed, it will host 14 operating rooms, a sterile processing department, 43 private pre- and post-operative patient rooms, an interventional pain medicine procedural room and a gastrointestinal endoscopy center.
3. Mayo Clinic will invest another $5 million to expand the Mankato facility's first-floor orthopedic clinic, to become the Mayo Clinic Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Clinic. The clinic will more than double its footprint and inhabit a total space of about 10,000-square-feet. In addition, 20 patient exam rooms, a minor procedure room, a specialized cast room and on-site radiology services for orthopedic patients will be expanded or renovated.
4. The orthopedic and sports medicine clinic will expand to six orthopedic surgeons and five physician assistants.
5. Construction is scheduled to begin late this year. Officials expect to complete the surgical suites and GI endoscopy center by late 2018.
