34 most expensive hospital expansion, renovation projects of 2016

Here are the most expensive hospital facility expansions or renovations announced or completed in 2016.

The following projects exceed $200 million in cost. They are listed below, beginning with the most expensive.

1. Miami-based Jackson Health System in July unveiled a $1.8 billion building plan that includes rebuilding at the Jackson Memorial Hospital campus, expansions at its other facilities and the construction of a $253 million medical campus in Doral, Fla.

2. Cleveland-based MetroHealth System plans to borrow $1.25 billion to build a new hospital on its main campus.

3. UC San Diego Health on Nov. 20 opened Jacobs Medical Center in La Jolla, Calif., a nearly $1 billion, 10-story medical center equipped with enhanced amenities for patients and expanded clinical capabilities.

4. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health's Public Health Council voted Oct. 20 to approve Boston Children's Hospital's proposal to begin construction on a $1 billion expansion project.

5. City, state and federal officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Nov. 18 to mark the long-awaited opening of the Veterans Affairs hospital in New Orleans. Although it was projected to cost about $625 million, a U.S. Government Accountability Office report said the actual cost of the new hospital came closer to $1 billion. 

6. Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based HCA East Florida, a Hospital Corporation of America subsidiary, will invest $650 million in its Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and St. Lucie County facilities, the company announced in July.

7. Providence Tarzana (Calif.) Medical Center in May unveiled plans to build a new $624 million patient wing and upgrade the existing buildings, which will no longer house inpatient care.

8. The Georgia Department of Community Health on Dec. 12 approved a request by Atlanta-based Piedmont Hospital to build a $603 million, 16-story patient tower next to its main campus.

9. New Hartford, N.Y.-based Mohawk Valley Health System in April announced it was pursuing plans to build a $570 million to $575 million new hospital in Utica, N.Y.

10. The local city board in early September approved Washington, D.C.-based MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's proposal to construct a new $567 million hospital.

11. St. Louis-based SSM Health unveiled plans in June for its new $550 million academic medical center. The 316-bed, 802,000-square-foot facility will replace the current hospital and outpatient care center at SSM Health St. Louis University Hospital.

12. The Maryland Health Care Commission voted Oct. 20 to approve a proposed $543 million hospital in Prince George's County. The proposed regional medical center is a joint venture between Cheverly, Md.-based Dimensions Healthcare System and Baltimore-based University of Maryland Medical System.

13. Tacoma, Wash.-based CHI Franciscan Health in late August submitted a letter of intent to the Washington State Department of Health requesting regulatory approval to invest in a new, $530 million hospital at Harrison Medical Center-Silverdale (Wash.). 

14. Portland-based Maine Medical Center officials in September proposed a $512 million expansion project of the facility.

15. Poughkeepsie, N.Y.-based Vassar Brothers Medical Center broke ground Sept. 13 on a new $500 million patient pavilion.

16. Mercy Medical Center announced plans in August of a $500 million expansion project at its main campus in Des Moines, Iowa.

17. Omaha, Neb.-based Children's Hospital & Medical Center broke ground on a $450 million facility Dec. 8.

18. A $400 million expansion to Mission Hospital in Asheville, N.C., will add 13 more beds than originally planned, the hospital disclosed in early August.

19. Charlottesville-based University of Virginia Medical Center began an 80-bed, $394 million expansion of its emergency department June 8.

20. Charleston-based Medical University of South Carolina broke ground on a $385 million children's hospital Aug. 12.

21. Iowa City-based University of Iowa Children's Hospital held a tour Nov. 5 of its new 14-story, $360 million complex.

22. Akron, Ohio-based Summa Health System revealed plans in April to inject $350 million into its facilities, including the construction of a new six-story tower on its main campus and improvements throughout other medical buildings and offices.

23. Woodbury, N.J.-based Inspira Health Network proposed plans in October to build a 210-bed, $349 million hospital to replace its current Woodbury facility.

24. UConn Health, based in Farmington, Conn., on April 29 opened its new 11-floor, $318 million tower at UConn John Dempsey Hospital.

25. Memphis, Tenn.-based Methodist University Hospital broke ground Oct. 5 on its $280 million master campus expansion plan.

26. The Delaware Health Resources Board in May approved Dover, Del.-based Bayhealth Medical Center's $277 million expansion plan.

27. Mercy Health Muskegon (Mich.) began construction on its $271 million, nine-story hospital Sept. 20.

28. Rogers-based Mercy Northwest Arkansas said April 27 it plans to invest nearly a quarter billion on capital projects and equipment over the next five years. The health system's $247 expansion in healthcare facilities and services will create 1,000 new jobs.

29. Sharp Chula Vista (Calif.) Medical Center broke ground on a $244 million, 197,000-square-foot hospital tower on Nov. 10.

30. A groundbreaking ceremony took place May 3 for the new, $233 million Franciscan St. Anthony Health hospital in Michigan City, Ind.

31. Duke LifePoint Healthcare announced in August it will build a $206 million hospital in Marquette, Mich.

32. El Camino Hospital in June announced plans to set aside $204 million in the 2016-17 fiscal year to expand their campus in Mountain View, California.

33. Woodbury, N.J.-based Inspira Health Network will spend $200 million to build a 204-bed hospital in Mullica Hill, N.J., the health system announced in September.

34. Los Angeles-based CHA Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center unveiled plans in April to modernize its more than 100-year-old facility to better serve the Hollywood community and surrounding areas. The expansion will cost an estimated $200 million.
