Oregon Health & Science University, a public entity based in Portland, gave six top executives a combined $1 million in bonuses this year, according to a Portland Tribune report.
Here are seven things to know about the bonuses.
1. The total executive team payments totaled $1,075,938, or 27 percent of the executives' combined current salaries, according to the report.
2. OHSU President Joe Robertson, MD, received a bonus of $396,447. That's in addition to an annual salary of more than $1 million, as well as more than $150,000 in earnings from OHSU clinical enterprise, according to the Portland Tribune.
3. OHSU spokeswoman Tamara Hargens-Bradley did not disclose details about Mr. Robertson's bonus, except to say Mr. Robertson "received additional payments ... after meeting milestones established beyond his annual incentives," according to the report.
4. Other executives who received bonuses were Peter Rapp, an executive vice president who is also executive director of OHSU Healthcare; Lawrence Furnstahl, executive vice president and CFO; Jeanette Mladenovic, an executive vice president and provost; Mark Richardson, executive president and dean of the OHSU School of Medicine; and Connie Seeley, senior vice president for public affairs and chief of staff.
5. The bonuses come after OHSU raised $1 billion for cancer research. According to the report, Mr. Robertson's contract included a $100,000 bonus for the university's fundraising success.
6. The bonuses also come after OSHU recently completed multiple deals. This year, Mr. Robertson negotiated a partnership with Salem (Ore.) Health, creating a management company to oversee the entities' respective clinical services as an integrated health system. Additionally, in December 2014 OHSU gave a $50 million loan to struggling Portland-based health insurer Moda Health, according to the report. The report noted that OHSU's board has since taken an option on an ownership stake in Moda.
7. Aside from the executives, other tiers of management at OHSU also receive incentive pay, according to the Portland Tribune.
