Humana launches orthopedic bundle in Tenn., expands Ohio bundles

Humana is launching a total hip and knee joint replacement bundled payment program in Tennessee with four orthopedic specialty groups, and expanding its bundles in Ohio with the addition of two more specialty groups.

The Tennessee bundled payment program will be for Humana Medicare Advantage members who receive care at Appalachian Orthopaedic Associates in the Tri-Cities, OrthoTennessee and Tennessee Orthopaedic Clinics in Knoxville, and Premier Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine in Nashville. It will function similarly to a model developed for total joint replacement by the State Innovation Model Grant through CMS.

In Ohio, Humana has already rolled out a bundled payment program with five orthopedic specialty groups. It will be adding Adena Medical Clinic in Columbus and University of Cincinnati Physicians in Cincinnati to this group.

"Value-based care is a powerful new approach to more involved medical procedures like total joint replacement," Humana Vice President of Payment Innovation Chip Howard said in a press release. "It's the key to building a health system that focuses on improving quality, lowering cost and creating a better experience for our members. We look forward to continue expanding this model."
