UnitedHealth posts $5B profit in Q3

UnitedHealth Group posted higher revenues and profits in the third quarter of fiscal year 2019, the health insurer said Oct. 15.

Four things to know:

1. UnitedHealth posted revenues of $60.4 billion in the third quarter ended Sept. 30, up $3.8 billion year over year. The growth was led by double-digit revenue gains in the health insurer's Optum business.

2. UnitedHealth's health insurance arm, UnitedHealthcare, served 415,000 more members in the past year, thanks to growth in its commercial and Medicare Advantage sectors. Its membership totaled about 50 million in the third quarter of this year.

3. Optum, UnitedHealth's health services business, which includes physicians, recorded revenue of $28.8 billion in the third quarter of FY 2019, up 13.3 percent year over year.

4. After including operating and nonoperating expenses, UnitedHealth recorded a $5 billion profit in the third quarter of FY 2019, up 9 percent from $4.6 billion in the same period a year prior.
