Gallup: Labor union approval hits 50-year high

Most Americans (64 percent) approve of labor unions, marking a significant increase in positive sentiment since the 2008-09 recession, according to Gallup.

The current 64 percent union approval rate is one of the highest ratings Gallup has recorded in the past five decades. Union approval is up 16 percentage points since 2009 among both Republicans and Democrats. Democrats, however, are still much more likely to approve of unions than Republicans (82 percent versus 45 percent).

This favorable view follows the current labor market. Gallup notes approval of unions goes up when unemployment is low. Union approval bottomed out in the years after the Great Recession, according to Gallup.

Unions represent 10 percent of working adults.
