Dr. Toby Cosgrove: Cleveland Clinic Found its Only For-Profit Partner in CHS

Toby Cosgrove, MD, president and CEO of Cleveland Clinic, recently detailed his organization's affiliation with Brentwood, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems, a for-profit hospital operator, according to a Tennessean report.

Cleveland Clinic and 135-hospital CHS announced their strategic partnership this week. The partnership, which is for an initial term of five years, will center around quality, cardiovascular services and clinical/operational services.

In a television appearance earlier this week, Dr. Cosgrove said Cleveland Clinic is going to partner with only "this for-profit organization," although the organization is "certainly open to do it with other non-profits," according to the report. Further reasoning was not provided in the report.

When it comes to branding, Dr. Cosgrove said the Cleveland Clinic name will not appear on any CHS hospitals in the near future, but he indicated that might be subject to change. "This is an infancy of a relationship," he said, "which is going to be a long and successful one, we're sure."

Dr. Cosgrove also said Cleveland Clinic is well-known for its high quality of care, whereas CHS is well-known for efficient hospital management. "We think the two [organizations] bring more value to our ability to drive value for your healthcare dollar and we see great synergy between these two organizations. We are very enthusiastic about this opportunity," he said, according to the report.
