A new study found an AI tool helped radiologists detect 39% more brain aneurysm cases on CT angiography exams. The findings were published Sept. 8 in the Journal of the American College of Radiology.
Here are five things to know:
1. Researchers evaluated an FDA-cleared AI tool from Aidoc across 3,856 CT angiography exams. The AI and radiologists agreed on more than 96% of cases.
2. The AI identified 55 true-positive aneurysm cases that radiologists did not, representing a 39% relative increase in detected cases.
3. The AI tool had a sensitivity of 84.6%, compared with 71.8% for radiologists. Radiologists had a higher rate of correct results overall, at 92.7% compared with 78.2% for the AI.
4. Radiologists identified 30 true-positive cases that the AI missed. Of 101 cases flagged only by the AI, 46 were confirmed as aneurysms.
5. The findings varied by care setting. Among inpatients, the AI identified 18 additional aneurysms while generating seven false alerts. In the outpatient setting, it identified four additional aneurysms but produced more false-positive than true-positive findings.
