New York Gov. Cuomo Requests Waiver for $10B Healthcare Investment

In an effort to build off the state Medicaid overhaul, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the state will request a waiver from CMS, which will allow the state to invest $10 billion to "transform the state's healthcare system."

The $10 billion would come from savings generated from New York's Medicaid Redesign Team, the group established in January 2011 tasked to reduce costs and spending within the state's Medicaid program. The MRT's current initiatives, which have been adopted by the state legislature, are expected to save New York $34.3 billion over the next five years.

"We have already taken the first steps to transform our state's healthcare system, including cutting costs to taxpayers and improving the quality of care," Gov. Cuomo said in a news release. "The Medicaid Redesign Team has led the charge, and this waiver will allow New York State to fully implement the groundbreaking MRT action plan to permanently restructure our healthcare system and make New York a national model."
