The American Hospital Association says changing to ICD-10 makes the Oct. 1, 2012 deadline for stage two of meaningful use unrealistic, according to an AHA advocacy issue paper on health information technology.
AHA expresses support for the change to ICD-10 because of its greater precision, but advocates for pushing back the deadline for stage two of meaningful use to Oct. 1, 2013 at the earliest.
"[The Oct. 2012] timeline is too aggressive for a new program, and is especially challenging in light of the many competing demands on hospital and physician IT systems, including the movement to a new coding system for payment (ICD-10)," AHA writes.
