Vermont vaccinates the most out of any U.S. state, while Mississippi vaccinates the least, according to a Sept. 9 ranking from personal finance website WalletHub.
WalletHub developed the ranking by comparing all 50 states and the District of Columbia across three areas: children and teenagers immunization rates, adult and elderly vaccination rates and immunization uptake disparities and influencing factors. Using 16 metrics, each was graded on a 100-point scale, with the weighted average across all metrics determining the overall rank.
The ranking comes as childhood vaccination coverage continues to slip nationally. CDC data from August showed MMR coverage among kindergartners fell to 92.4% for the 2025-26 school year, below the 95% threshold needed to prevent measles spread, while vaccine exemptions hit a record 4.2%.
