The American Nurses Association recognized patient blood management nursing as a nursing specialty.
The June 17 announcement means that PBM nursing is an officially recognized specialty with a scope and standards document defining practice, according to a Society for the Advancement of Patient Blood Management news release. SABM is the overarching association for this specialty and will set standards for continuing education, professional development and establish a formal certification credential for PBM nurses.
A workgroup of nurses from SABM first entered a partnership with the ANA in 2021 to work toward recognition.
“SABM is proud to celebrate this success, which reflects the collective commitment of our society,” it said in the release. “Led by our nursing members and championed by the Board of Directors and colleagues from across all disciplines, this achievement highlights the power of collaboration in advancing our shared goals.”
