To advance health in its community, Houston-based Memorial Hermann Health System is participating in the city's Smoking Cessation Awareness Week campaign.
During the campaign — which concludes on Sept. 25 — Memorial Hermann will be doing its part to educate its employees, patients and the general public about the harms of tobacco use and exposure.
"As the largest city in Texas with the largest medical center in the world, we have a responsibility to set an example not only in our state, but throughout the United States and beyond when it comes to raising awareness about the health risks associated with tobacco use," said Dan Wolterman, president and CEO of Memorial Hermann.
According to Mr. Wolterman, Houston can become the city that "puts an end to smoking" if everyone in the community works together.
This campaign is not the first time Memorial Hermann has taken action to encourage smoking cessation; the health system implemented a non-tobacco use policy several years ago for all employees and patients and began offering tobacco cessation programs through several of its outpatient departments and clinics that are open to the general public.
