The Department of Veterans Affairs is deploying AI-based enhancements to its pharmacy module alongside the rollout of its modernized EHR, according to an Oct. 5 GovCIO Media & Research report.

The module includes an AI transcription agent to help clinical pharmacists generate notes after speaking with patients and is expected to be fully operational at all current EHR sites by the end of October.

The VA pharmacy team identified 20 improvements to the module, with the first seven selected before the Michigan EHR rollout. The enhancements are not available at sites that have not deployed the new EHR. Anchorage and Cleveland have an Oct. 24 EHR go-live date.

Additional pharmacy enhancements are expected in February and March 2027. The VA and Oracle are also developing Pharmacy Forward, a new module expected to roll out in 2027 with additional AI capabilities and a workflow designed to reduce prescription-processing steps.
