Minnesota had the lowest breast cancer screening recall rate, an indicator of imaging efficiency, between July 1, 2022, and June 30, 2023, according to CMS data published Feb. 19.

The national breast cancer screening recall rate was 9% for the same time period.

CMS uses Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment System and Physician Part B claims to measure how often four specific imaging tests are performed when potentially not medically appropriate to do so.

The four tests are abdominal CT scans with contrast material, cardiac imaging stress tests before low-risk outpatient surgery, additional breast cancer screening within 45 days of an initial mammogram and lumbar spine MRIs for low back pain.

A lower percentage score suggests a more efficient use of medical imaging.
